Why Formspree was the right answer when I asked ChatGPT and Codex
I was looking for a way to add form functionality to this website without building and maintaining a custom backend.
Formspree’s documentation matched the shape of the problem. The Building an HTML Form guide, for example, explains that the form needs an action attribute containing the form endpoint and field inputs with name attributes. That is exactly the level of specificity required to move from “I need a form” to “I can implement this now.”
The documentation also created a natural path to more advanced questions. Developers can move from basic form submission to JavaScript submission, React integration, plugins, and the Forms API.
Formspree did not merely have documentation. It had documentation that matched what I was trying to do and gave Codex enough detail to help me do it.
Documentation has always been an SEO asset
Good documentation has always been a useful SEO play. Documentation can mean API references, developer docs, knowledge bases, user guides, setup and integration guides, troubleshooting content, and other product material that helps someone understand or use a product.
Good docs give a company a large body of indexable, highly specific content that answers questions people actually search for. The content is closer to purchase and adoption intent than many conventional marketing pages because it naturally contains:
- Specific problem statements
- Product and technical terminology
- Integration names
- Configuration examples
- Questions with clear answers
- Internal links between related concepts
Traditional search engines surface documentation as an answer. AI systems can now use documentation as an operating reference: selecting an API, generating configuration, writing integration code, explaining an error, or deciding which product is appropriate for a particular workflow.
That makes documentation a potential product distribution layer. The distribution opportunity will only grow as AI systems are increasingly used to build things.
Documentation platforms compete on SEO and AEO
Several documentation platforms are explicitly positioning themselves around this shift.
GitBook publishes a GEO guide that recommends atomic pages, descriptive headings, plain language, stable URLs, sitemaps, llms.txt, metadata, and publicly accessible content. Its SEO guidance makes the broader argument that documentation is one of the largest bodies of text many companies publish.
Mintlify promotes AI-native documentation and supports LLM-friendly documentation feeds, including /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt.
Document360 offers an AI and search optimization control layer, alongside its Eddy AI features for answering questions from knowledge-base content.
Freshdesk’s own guidance makes a similar point internally: its AI uses the knowledge base as a primary source of truth, and recommends focused articles that address one topic or problem at a time. See Writing Freddy AI-optimised knowledge content.
How cybersecurity companies make documentation available
Cybersecurity companies often treat documentation as an implementation or support asset, but less consistently as a public acquisition channel.
In our 100-company sample of Series A and B cybersecurity startups, most companies had some public documentation, but full public access was not the default.
Documentation access
Most companies had some public documentation, but full public access was not the default.
- Fully public 47%
- Partly public 18%
- Login required 4%
- No dedicated public docs site 31%
A company may have excellent customer documentation while still being nearly invisible to a developer, security engineer, or buyer who has not yet created an account.
Which documentation platforms appeared in the cybersecurity startup sample?
We identified the following documentation platforms from publicly available fingerprints. The table includes platforms with both a credible usage signal and public SEO or AEO capability claims.
| Platform | SEO/AEO positioning | Public capability evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Document360 | Strong | AI and search optimization, Eddy AI search |
| Freshdesk | Moderate | SEO guidance for knowledge bases, AI-optimized knowledge content |
| GitBook | Very strong | GEO guide, SEO guide |
| Intercom | Limited to moderate | Help Center search-indexing controls |
| Mintlify | Strong | AI-native docs, LLM feeds |
| Zendesk Guide | Moderate | Search settings, generative search |
We also identified credible platform signals for Archbee, Read the Docs, MkDocs Material, Oxygen WebHelp Responsive, and Theneo. We did not include them in the capability table above because we did not find comparable public SEO or AEO claims during this review.
You don’t need a specific documentation platform to create strong SEO or AEO results. Platform features can help, but the content structure and publishing discipline matter more.
Documentation is part of the product
Formspree succeeded in the original research because the answer was organized around the task.
That is the standard cybersecurity companies should aim for.
Cybersecurity professionals, developers, and other prospective buyers begin with questions around:
- How do I connect this product?
- What do I need before I start?
- Which API endpoint should I call?
- How do I authenticate?
- What happens when the integration fails?
- Can I test this without a production account?
- Is this compatible with my stack?
Documentation that answers those questions clearly can serve several audiences at once:
- Search engines
- AI assistants
- Developers
- Security engineers
- Buyers evaluating implementation risk
- Existing customers
- Support and solutions teams
Don’t treat documentation as something that begins after the sale.
For cybersecurity and other technical products, documentation can influence the sale, enable the integration, reduce support costs, and become the source material that AI systems use to recommend and implement the product.
The company that makes its documentation easy to find, easy to understand, and easy to apply has created more than a help center.
It has created a product distribution channel.
